Sound bath is a type of meditation where sound therapy instruments are played live in the room by the expert facilitator, while meditators lie on the floor on a yoga or other comfortable mat with blanket over to keep comfortable and warm.

A medical questionnaire is not generally required for participants of a sound bath, except where sound therapy instruments will be placed on the body of the meditators during the sound bath.  If this happens the event is no longer a sound bath alone, and should be correctly advertised to avoid confusion by the public.  For a detailed explanation of the requirements please see below.

Is a Medical Questionnaire Really Necessary For Participants of a Sound Bath?

Most of the time, a medical questionnaire is not necessary for a sound bath.  During a sound bath meditation, there will be no sound therapy instruments placed on the body of the meditators.  This is where the confusion arises.

A medical questionnaire is generally only required for a sound therapy clinical treatment.  The only time a medical questionnaire is required for a sound bath is when one or more sound therapy instruments will be placed on the body of the meditators during the sound bath.

If this happens, a medical questionnaire is indeed necessary for each participant, a private consultation is also required for each individual in order to adequately discuss the medical questionnaire in private, to correctly establish if any known health warnings apply to the individual, to determine if there is any situation where instruments on the body should be avoided..

Cases Where Sound Therapy Instruments On the Body Must be Strictly Avoided Include:

a)  Abdomen during pregnancy

b)  Pacemaker and certain heart conditions

b)  The site of metal or other implants

c) The site of recent or previous surgery – where application of the sound therapy instrument on the body may cause pain

d) The site of current or previous injury – where application of the sound therapy instrument on the body may cause pain

e) Any health condition where the meditator is unsure if the instruments on the body will be beneficial for them.

When sound therapy instruments of any kind, including Himalayan singing bowls, or tuning forks are to be placed on the body during the sound bath, the event is no longer a sound bath alone, and should be correctly advertised as such to avoid confusion with the public.
